My friend is having a rough time. Her daughter had a car accident. Money woes, health woes, it’s all starting to add up.
Another friend is having a rough time with her ex-husband and custody and child support.
I’ve got my own set of stresses.
But my friend, the sister I’ve never met was saying that she was putting on the armor of God because she really needs the shoes of peace.
And she gave me an idea.
Please bear with me, because I just finished working a local election, and I am beyond exhausted. However, I find that often brings my best ideas.
Ephesians 6:10-20New International Version (NIV)
The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,
John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
Romans 3:22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
Luke 12:35-40 35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
that comes from the gospel of peace.
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
17 Take the helmet of salvation
Hebrews 2:3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
So there you are, my friend, my sister, my fellow traveler. Here is your armor. You gave me a book for peace and comfort. I give you my words. I love you.
